Not everyone really knows how to play with a newborn, though. They can’t play board games, and even basic toys are reserved for the future.
To play with a newborn, you just need to stimulate all their little senses. Anything that captures their attention and rouses curiosity is a game to these little guys. Just be sure and let them rest if they seem overly tired or fussy.
Here are the senses you can “play” on to create games your newborn will love!
Things they can see
Newborns have seen very little of the world, and they’re still learning how to look at things. Even the simplest change in their line of sight is a fascinating development. So the best games for teeny babies are the ones that give them something interesting to see.
Babies love (like really, really LOVE) faces. The expressions on your is a source of endless amusement and wonder for your newborn. Wiggling your eyebrows, winking, sticking out your tongue, and smiling (lots of smiling!) are all better than Candy-Land will ever be!
They also like looking at new things. Hold up toys and other items for them to look at, especially things with contrasting colors (opposites) clean lines, and bold patterns that are easy to see. Their eyes are still adjusting to their world, and the easier something is to make out, the better they can see it.
They also like to see the world around them. Even the shelves at the supermarket are new and fun, so take your baby out to see the world, and remember that the most ordinary things are still brand new to your baby.
Newborns are also fascinated by things that move. Mobiles, toys that dance and wiggle, even your hand waving are all interesting to a new baby.
Things they can hear
One of the first things a baby learns to recognize is the voice of a loved one. They live for hearing you talk, laugh, and sing…so give them lots to listen to.
Chattering as you go about your day is fascinating conversation to a newborn, so keep up the commentary no matter how mundane. “I’m going to wash some clothes. See all the laundry piled up? Let’s get it all clean so we can wear fresh clean stuff tomorrow!”
You can also play music, as long as you don’t play it too loud for their tiny developing ears. Different kinds of music are fascinating to babies.
Things they can feel
Touch is very important to babies, and to all children. Every hug, every kiss, and every tiny touch is precious to them…and the more love they feel the more it helps their development.
Babies, even newborns, love to be touched and tickled gently. You can tickle the bottoms of their little feet and walk your fingers up their legs and arms. Gently touching their nose, cheeks, and forehead can provide an amusing guessing game for them as they watch your finger move closer, then feel the touch.
You can also let them explore textures. Brush a soft blanket against their skin, and let them touch smooth blocks, your fur jacket, or your rough wool sweater. Every new texture is a whole new world to them!
That’s the best thing about playing with a newborn…every new thing is a game to them!
